LA VERNE, Calif. -- The Washington & Jefferson College men's water polo team earned a 6-5 victory over Caltech during a 1-1 day Friday at the Gary Troyer Tournament in Southern California. The Presidents dropped an 18-7 decision to No. 9 Occidental earlier in the day.
#9 Occidental 18, W&J 7
Ninth-ranked Occidental scored eight goals in the first quarter en route to the 18-7 victory. The Tigers led 8-2 after the first quarter and 12-3 at halftime. Oxy scored four of the six goals in the third quarter before both teams tallied a pair of fourth quarter goals.
Will Kitsch (Mohnton, Pa./Governor Mifflin) and
Ryan Bannon (Broomfield, Colo. / Broomfield) led W&J with two goals apiece.
Cam Spicer (Lansing, Mich./East Lansing),
Anthony Ames (Canyon County, Calif./Canyon) and
Aiden Johnson (Nassau, Bahamas/Windsor) tallied a goal each in the loss.
Caine Dusza (Souderton, Pa./Souderton) registered nine saves in net.
W&J 6, Caltech 5
Each team scored three goals in the first quarter. W&J added two additional goals in the second quarter to take a 5-3 edge at the halftime break. Caltech tallied two of the three second half goals to close within a goal (6-5) but W&J was able to hold on.
Johnson put together a hat trick performance with three goals against the Beavers. Bannon aided the offense with one goal and three assists in the victory.
Dusza finished with seven saves during the one-goal victory.
W&J (6-6 overall) faces Westcliff and Claremont Mudd-Scripps in action on Saturday.
