Women's Tennis hands Westminster its first loss in 5-4 thriller

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Maya Krishnasamy (Ventura, Calif./Ventura) clinched a 5-4 victory over Westminster College in a matchup of two of the best in the Presidents' Athletic Conference Monday evening at the Janet Swanson Tennis Center. 

The 5-4 decision in favor of W&J puts the two teams in a tie for second place in the PAC standings. The win improves the Presidents to 6-2 overall and 5-1 in PAC play. The loss is the first of the season for the Titans, who fall to 8-1 overall and 5-1 in league matches. 

W&J faced a deficit after Westminster claimed two of the three doubles matches. Krishnasamy and Nidhi Pulicherla (Chandler, Ariz./Hamilton) earned a hard fought 8-6 victory at No. 1 doubles. Bella Goldman (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper Saint Clair) and Libby Conlon (Renfrew, Pa./Knoch) dropped a narrow 8-7 (7-4) decision at the No. 2 doubles spot. 

Pooja Potluri (West Fargo, N.D./West Fargo) earned W&J's first victory in singles play. Potluri won by a 6-0, 6-0 score at the number six position. 

Pulicherla gave W&J a 3-2 lead with a 6-2, 6-3 straight set victory at No. 2 singles. Goldman then extended the Presidents' advantage to 4-2 with a 6-2, 6-1 straight set win at No. 3 singles. 

Krishnasamy sealed the victory for the Presidents with a straight set win at the No. 1 singles position. The senior secured a 6-3, 6-1 decision to record the fifth point for W&J. Krishnasamy improved her career singles record to 42-7 overall. She is 31-2 all-time in PAC singles matches. 

The Presidents conclude the regular season with a home match versus Grove City College on Wednesday, Oct. 13. Start time is set for 6 p.m.
