WASHINGTON, Pa. --
Parker Byas (Columbia, Md./Mount Saint Joseph) scored in the fifth minute of play, allowing the Washington & Jefferson men's soccer team to play with the lead for the majority of the match in a 2-1 win over visiting Waynesburg Wednesday night at Alexandre Stadium.
W&J improves to 2-3 in PAC play and 3-6 overall with the victory. Waynesburg slips to 0-5 in the PAC and 1-11 overall.
The Presidents out-shot Waynesburg by a 21-17 margin and held a slight 4-3 advantage in corner kicks during the match.
W&J came out aggressively in the first half as Byas' goal was the first shot recorded in the match. The Presidents controlled the pace in the first half, as the Red and Black registered nine of the 12 shots over the first 45 minutes.
Jake Klonowski (Allison Park, Pa./Shaler) found the back of the net in the 55th minute of action to extend the W&J lead to 2-0. The goal was the first of the season for Klonowski.
Waynesburg tallied a goal just 10 minutes later as Tyler Mohrbacher gathered a loss ball, dribbled through the defense and scored from 10 yards out. The Yellow Jackets could not score again as the veteran defensive unit of
Joey Feola (Carnegie, Pa./Central Catholic),
Quinn Pickering (Camp Hill, Pa./Camp Hill), and
Jonathan Youse (New Cumberland, Pa./Cedar Cliff) helped W&J earn the narrow victory.
Senior goalkeeper
Sam Miller (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg) recorded eight saves on the night throughout 90 minutes.
Feola and
McKinley Joseph (Stamford, Conn./King School) each registered three shots for the Presidents.
W&J hosts Franciscan University on Saturday, Oct. 16. for Senior Day at Alexandre Stadium. Match time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
