W&J drops PAC match to Westminster

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson volleyball team fell to Presidents' Athletic Conference leader Westminster at home Thursday evening at Salvitti Family Gymnasium. The Presidents were swept by the Titans.

Westminster 3, W&J 0 (25-10, 25-11, 25-13)

Gianna Platt (Pittsburgh, Pa./OLSH) registered the first point of the night with a kill. A few points later, back-to-back kills from Jaden Blough (Meyersdale, Pa./Meyersdale) and Lizzie Carmichael (Wyoming, Ohio/ Wyoming) gave the Presidents a slight 3-2 lead over the Titans. Westminster was able to gain the lead and pull ahead throughout the remainder of the set. Multiple runs gave Westminster a 25-10 victory in set one.

Westminster notched the first three points before a Kaitlyn DeLauter (Marysville, Ohio/North Union) kill gave W&J its first points of the second set. It did not take Westminster long to regain the momentum as they recorded another six consecutive points to strengthen its lead. Ashley Bertling (Berkley, Mich./Berkley) launched a shot right into the empty center of the court to stop the Titans run. Three out of the final five points for the Presidents in the set came from Blough.

The Titans raced out to an 8-0 lead in the beginning of the third set to gain control. Blough continued her strong play, tallying a kill to put a point on the board for W&J. Westminster added another six point run to bolster its lead before securing a 25-13 set victory to end the match.

Blough led the team offensively with eight kills. Alexis Tomassini (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg) recorded 17 assists. Sophia Sacriponte (Butler, Pa./Butler) was the lone President to record double-digit digs (10).

W&J will travel to Steubenville, Ohio this Saturday (Oct. 16) to face Franciscan for the final time in the 2021 season. The match is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
