KEUKA PARK, N.Y. -- The Washington & Jefferson College field hockey team saw its three-match winning streak snapped by Keuka College in a tough 2-1 overtime setback Saturday in New York.
The loss drops W&J to 4-6 overall and 3-3 in Empire 8 Conference play. Keuka improves to 3-7 overall and 1-4 in league action.
W&J recorded five of the six shots and all four penalty corners over the course of a scoreless first half of play. The Presidents were able to strike first midway through the third quarter.
Madison Devine (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) tallied her first collegiate goal, as the junior scored off of a centering pass from freshman
Camryn Cresci (Wilmington, Del./Alexis I. DuPont). Devine tucked the goal inside the right post to give W&J the lead.
Keuka used a penalty corner opportunity to even the score in the final minute of the third quarter. McKenzie Hoyt found the back of the cage after a pass from Makaela Mills.
The Presidents recorded six of the seven shots over the final 15 minutes of regulation, which included four penalty corner opportunities for the Red and Black. However, W&J couldn't score a potential go-ahead goal and the match went to overtime.
Just minutes into overtime, W&J appeared to tally the game-winning goal when
Emily Heck (Reading, Pa./Berks Catholic) sent a shot into the back of the cage. However, the officials ruled that the penalty corner insert never left the circle and the goal was disallowed.
Skylar Gilmore scored the game winner for Keuka with just 1:58 remaining in overtime.
The Presidents fell short in the setback despite several statistical advantages: shots (18-7), shots on goal (11-5) and penalty corners (13-6).
Sophomore
Hailey Wachowiak (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) registered a season-hight eight shots (five shots on goal) to lead W&J. Sophomore goalkeeper
Anastasia Godat (Baltimore, Md./Concordia Prepatory School) tallied a pair of saves in 68+ minutes.
W&J travels to E8 leader St. John Fisher for a match on Saturday, Oct. 23. Start time is scheduled for 12 p.m.
