Katie Brown, Maegan Martin tally first collegiate goals to lead W&J to 2-1 win at Thiel

GREENVILLE, Pa. -- Second half goals by sophomore Katie Brown (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) and freshman Maegan Martin (Beaver, Pa./Beaver) lifted the Washington & Jefferson women's soccer team to a 2-1 road win over Thiel College Tuesday evening.

The drama-filled 2021 campaign continued for the Presidents, as Tuesday's game marked the 10th time that the result was decided by a single goal. W&J has won seven of the 10 one-goal decisions.

Neither team was able to crack the scoreboard during the first half of play. W&J had numerous opportunities over the first 45 minutes, as they recorded 10 of the 11 shots. The Presidents also tallied four of the five corner kicks during the first half. Senior forward Katie Hahn (Volant, Pa./Wilmington) came out firing, as she recorded six shots in the first half, four of which were on goal.

The second half was much more competitive on the stat sheet. W&J held a narrow 10-9 margin in shots on goal over the final 45 minutes. The host Tomcats scored the game's first goal in the 53rd minute of play. Thiel took advantage of a foul which setup a free kick opportunity from just inside W&J territory. Emily Harriman knocked in the score from Thiel directly off the free kick from Bailey Fritz.

W&J evened the score a little more than six minutes later when senior Courtney Crivelli (Beaver, Pa./Beaver) connected with Brown, who found the right side of the net off of a header to tally her first collegiate goal.

The score remained tied until the 86th minute when Martin delivered the eventual game-winning goal. Brown started the scoring opportunity for W&J by sending a shot on net, which was saved but bounced right to Martin, who was standing near the left post. Martin, who had just entered the game a few minutes early, took advantage of the fortuitous bounce and scored to give W&J a 2-1 advantage.

Hahn finished with a career-high nine shots while Brown contributed five shots. Junior goalkeeper Gabriella Lloyd (Butler, Pa./Butler) started and worked a scoreless first half. Sophomore goalkeeper Abby Hipkins (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) made a pair of saves over the final 45 minutes.

W&J held advantages in shots (19-11), shots on goal (10-3) and corner kicks (7-1).

The victory moves W&J to 4-2-1 in PAC play (13 points) and 7-7-2 overall. The loss drops Thiel to 1-6 in the league and 4-8-1 overall.

W&J travels to Geneva for another important PAC match on Saturday, Oct. 23. Start time is set for 4:30 p.m. in Beaver Falls.
