ELMIRA, N.Y. -- A fourth quarter hat trick by
Hailey Wachowiak (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) helped the Washington & Jefferson College field hockey team to a decisive 5-0 victory over Elmira College in an Empire 8 Conference match Saturday in New York.
Madeline Hubbard (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg) set the tone with an unassisted goal in the fifth minute of play. The goal was the first of the season for the senior.
Less than two minutes later, junior
Lina Crowley (Potomac, Md./The Bullis School) made it 2-0 off an assist by Hubbard in the seventh minute. The goal was the fourth of the season for Crowley. Despite several scoring chances and penalty corner opportunities the score remained 2-0 W&J heading into halftime.
After a scoreless third quarter, W&J put the game away with three fourth quarter goals by Wachowiak. Wachowiak scored unassisted in the 49th minute. A little more than three minutes later, Wachowiak scored off an assist from Crowley in the 52nd minute to make it 4-0 Presidents.
Wachowiak finished off her second hat trick of the season with an unassisted goal in the 56th minute.
Wachowiak (three goals), Hubbard (one goal, one assist) and Crowley (goal, assist) all finished with multi-point efforts in the victory.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Anastasia Godat (Baltimore, Md./Concordia Preparatory School) made six saves to post the shutout, which was her second of the season.
W&J held significant advantages in shots (20-7), shots on goal (11-6) and penalty corners (13-7).
The win improves the Presidents to 2-2 in E8 play while Elmira falls to 0-2 in conference games.
W&J travels to Oberlin College for a non-conference match on Wednesday, Oct. 6. Start time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
