OBERLIN, Ohio -- A goal by sophomore
Emily Heck (Reading, Pa./Berks Catholic) in the opening minute of play was the difference for the Washington & Jefferson field hockey team in a 1-0 non-conference victory at Oberlin College on Wednesday night.
The victory was the third shutout of the season for W&J, who improved to 3-5 overall in 2021. The loss drops Oberlin to 0-9.
Heck scored the lone goal of the match just 56 seconds into the match, as the sophomore scored off an assist from senior
Madeline Hubbard (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg). The assist was the sixth of the season for Hubbard, who currently leads all Empire 8 players with .750 assists per game.
W&J registered all six shots in the first half and held a 13-2 edge in the match. W&J attempted seven penalty corners while Oberlin registered just two penalty corner attempts.
Hubbard paced W&J offensively with three shots while
Camryn Cresci (Wilmington, Del./Alexis I. DuPont),
Madison Devine (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) and
Hailey Wachowiak (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) finished with two shots apiece.
Anastasia Godat (Baltimore, Md./Concordia Preparatory School) tallied one save in 60 minutes to earn the victory in net.
W&J will aim for its third straight victory when they host Sage in an Empire 8 match on Saturday, Oct. 9. Start time is scheduled for 10 a.m. as part of Homecoming Weekend at W&J.
