Heck tallies first collegiate goal as Field Hockey earns third shutout win of 2021

OBERLIN, Ohio -- A goal by sophomore Emily Heck (Reading, Pa./Berks Catholic) in the opening minute of play was the difference for the Washington & Jefferson field hockey team in a 1-0 non-conference victory at Oberlin College on Wednesday night.

The victory was the third shutout of the season for W&J, who improved to 3-5 overall in 2021. The loss drops Oberlin to 0-9.

Heck scored the lone goal of the match just 56 seconds into the match, as the sophomore scored off an assist from senior Madeline Hubbard (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg). The assist was the sixth of the season for Hubbard, who currently leads all Empire 8 players with .750 assists per game.

W&J registered all six shots in the first half and held a 13-2 edge in the match. W&J attempted seven penalty corners while Oberlin registered just two penalty corner attempts.

Hubbard paced W&J offensively with three shots while Camryn Cresci (Wilmington, Del./Alexis I. DuPont), Madison Devine (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) and Hailey Wachowiak (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) finished with two shots apiece. Anastasia Godat (Baltimore, Md./Concordia Preparatory School) tallied one save in 60 minutes to earn the victory in net.

W&J will aim for its third straight victory when they host Sage in an Empire 8 match on Saturday, Oct. 9. Start time is scheduled for 10 a.m. as part of Homecoming Weekend at W&J.
