Balanced effort leads W&J to dominant 7-0 victory over Sage

WASHINGTON, Pa -- Freshman Camryn Cresci (Wilmington, Del./ Alexis I. DuPont) scored her first two collegiate goals to help lead the Washington & Jefferson field hockey team to a 7-0 victory at home Saturday morning. In front of the homecoming crowd, the Presidents scored three goals in the first quarter to race out to an early lead in the victory.

The Presidents took an early lead, scoring in the fourth minute as sophomore Hailey Wachowiak (Wexford, Pa./ North Allegheny) found the back of the goal after the ball deflected off the stick of a Lindsey Diggan (Sinking Springs, Pa./ Governor Mifflin). Diggan then turned around to find the back of the goal after W&J's first penalty corner attempt. On the penalty corner, senior Madeline Hubbard (Gettysburg, Pa./ Gettysburg Area) shuffled it over to Ashley Kunkle (East Berlin, Pa./ Bermudian Springs), who was able to pass the ball for Diggan for the goal.

The Presidents went into halftime with a four-goal lead after Emily Heck (Reading, Pa./Berks Catholic) registered the final two goals of the second quarter. Both of Heck's goals came from W&J's penalty corners with an assist from Grace Kirwin (Philadelphia, Pa./ Abington) in the 15th minute of action.

Leading 5-0 in the fourth quarter, the Presidents drew a foul on Sage as they were just outside the opponents goal. Wachowiak was able to find the loose ball and send it up to Cresci right outside the box. Cresci shot the ball full force from a yard out to score her first collegiate goal advancing the Presidents 6-0. Early in the fourth, Hubbard passed the ball as Cresci, who found the back of the goal once again.

Sophomore goalkeeper Anastasia Godat (Baltimore, Md./ Concordia Preparatory School) registered two saves in 60 minutes of action. The strong defensive unit of Kunkle, Diggan, Tiana Swierski (Phoenix, Ariz./Hammond (Md.)), and Madison Devine (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) helped W&J register its third consecutive shutout.

The Presidents will travel to Keuka Park, N.Y. next Saturday (Oct. 16) to face off against Keuka. The game is scheduled to start at 12 PM.
