W&J unable to hold early lead in loss to Austin College


NEW LONDON, Conn. -- The Washington & Jefferson College men's water polo team dropped a 14-8 decision to Austin College (Texas) in the third place game of the Division III Eastern Championships Sunday in action at Connecticut College. 

Cam Spicer (East Lansing, Mich./East Lansing) scored twice to help W&J take a 4-2 lead after the first quarter of play. Austin took the lead and seemingly control the match by scoring all four goals in the second quarter to take a 6-4 advantage into halftime. The Roos tallied four of the five goals in the third quarter to extend their lead to 10-5. Mitchell Rubio (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) registered the lone goal of the frame for W&J. 

Spicer added two more goals in the fourth while Aidan Johnson (Nassau, Bahamas/Windsor) found the back of the net as well. Austin was able to record four goals in the fourth quarter to earn the 14-8 victory. Will Kitsch (Mohnton, Pa./Governor Mifflin) and Spicer were named to the All-Tournament Team 

The loss drops 9-10 overall in 2021. W&J returns to action on Saturday, Nov. 6 when they face Mercyhurst at the Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference Western Division Championship.
