ERIE, Pa. -- The W&J men's water polo team suffered a pair of defeats Saturday in Erie. The Presidents fell by a 17-9 score to Mercyhurst University in the opener. W&J then finished the day with a 14-9 setback against Gannon University.
Mercyhurst 17, W&J 9
Ryan Bannon led the Presidents with three goals and two assists against the Lakers.
Chris Edwards (Bexley, Ohio/St. Charles Prep) and
Mitchell Rubio (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) tallied two goals apiece.
Andrew Edwards (Columbus, Ohio/St. Charles Prep) and
Kyle Rubenstein (Abington, Pa./Upper Dublin) recorded a goal each.
Alex Lee (Los Angeles, Calif./Eagle Rock) made seven saves in goal for W&J.
Gannon 14, W&J 10
A big second quarter hindered the Presidents' efforts to pick up their first win. After taking a slim 4-3 lead into the second quarter, the Knights used a 5-1 spurt to build a 9-4 advantage at half. Gannon extended the lead to 13-6 heading to the fourth. The Presidents scored four of the final five goals to close the score at 14-10.
Rubio scored two goals and added an assist.
Andrew Edwards registered a pair of scores while
AJ Alderman (Camp Hill, Pa./Cumberland Valley) scored a pair of goals and tallied a block. Rubenstein and Bannon had a goal and an assist each.
Ethan Moy (New York, N.Y./The High School for Math, Science & Engineering) picked up a goal as well in the loss.
Lee finished with eight saves and three steals in net for W&J.
What's Next: W&J will compete in the Mid-Atlantic Western Region Championships on Feb. 27-28.
