GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson College men's lacrosse team opened its season with an 18-2 defeat to Grove City on Saturday afternoon.
The Presidents scored a pair of third quarter goals with
Pat Brunner (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Saint Joseph) and
Grant Allison (Venetia, Pa./Carson Long Military Institute) finding the back of the next in the third quarter.
Grove City built a 7-0 advantage after the first quarter and led 12-0 at the half. W&J cashed in on an extra-man opportunity midway through the third quarter with Brunner finding the back fo the net with 8:36 left in the third.
Luke Geister (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) won the ensuing faceoff and Allison scored less than 30 seconds later off a feed from Brendan Triback (Enola, Pa./Trinity) to cut Grove City's lead to 14-2. The Wolverines scored the game's final four goals to win 18-2.
Junior attack
Alex Strain (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper Saint Clair) record 14 of the Presidents' 28 shots on the afternoon. He notched five of W&J's 14 shots on goal. Brunner added five shots, three on goal.
Geister snatched six ground balls, caused three turnovers and went 8-22 from the faceoff X with the long pole. Jame Deiulis (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper Saint Clair) added three caused turnovers and three ground balls.
Brody Alloway (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) and
Henry Beardwood (Wilmington, Del./Salesianum School) split goalkeeping duties for W&J. Alloway made nine saves in the first half and Beardwood had four stops in the second.
The Presidents host Saint Vincent next Saturday.
