Men’s Soccer opens 2021 with statement win at Westminster

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson College men's soccer team had three goals off the bench as the Presidents secured a 4-2 victory at Presidents' Athletic Conference rival Westminster on Saturday afternoon.

The Presidents move to 1-0 on the season while Westminster drops to 0-1. W&J extends its win streak against PAC opponents to 10 games. Westminster was the only conference opponent not to fall to the Presidents last year as the two teams battled to a 1-1 tie in the 2019 conference opener.

Westminster struck first in the 13th minute with a diving header by Michael Roman off a corner kick to put the hosts ahead 1-0.

The Presidents responded in the 22nd minute as Jake Fetterman (Pottstown, Pa./The Hill School) fed Quinn Pickering (Camp Hill, Pa./Camp Hill) at the top of the 18-yard box and Pickering blasted home his first collegiate goal.

In the 41st minute, the Presidents cashed in on a transition opportunity as Jayden Da (Rockville, Md./Richard Montgomery) quickly dribbled the ball down the center of the Westminster defense and found McKinley Joseph (Stamford, Conn./King School), who buried his first career goal.

Samuel Miller (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg) made a save in the 62nd minute preserve the Presidents' lead, but Westminster found an equalizer in the 64th minute as Kai Haseyama snuck in a goal to tie the match at two.

Freshman Jake Klonowski (Alison Park, Pa./Shaler) put the Presidents ahead for good in the 70th minute and gave W&J an insurance goal with a tally in the 74th minute. Da set up Klonowski for the go-ahead goal. Klonowski's hustle earned him his second goal as the Westminster goalkeeper made a diving play to keep the ball in play, but Klonowski pounced on the rebound and put home his second goal.

Both teams recorded 12 shots with the Presidents owning a six-five edge in shots on goal.

Miller made three saves in 90 minutes to earn the win.

The Presidents return to action next Sunday at Saint Vincent.
