NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson College women's soccer team lost 2-1 at Westminster in the Presidents' 2020-21 season opener.
Westminster built a 2-0 advantage with a pair of second half goals, but junior
McKenna Lewis (Hershey, Pa./Hershey) scored on a penalty kick in the 89th minute to make the final score 2-1 Titans.
Neither team found the back of the net in the first half. Westminster tested freshman goalkeeper
Abby Hipkins (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) twice in the first 10 minutes, but she turned away both attempts.
After the initial first two attempts on frame by Westminster, W&J had the final five shots on goal for the half, but none were able to beat Westminster keeper Camille Holzschuh. A late shot by
Aimee Toscano (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown Area) was thwarted by a Westminster defender making a goal-saving play.
The Titans scored the game's first goal 29 seconds into the second half and added a second goal about five minutes later. The Presidents placed seven shots on target before Lewis' PK.
Lewis led W&J with four shots on target. Toscano had four shots, three on goal.
Lexey Finney (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) had three shots, two on goal and
Katie Brown (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) had two shots on goal.
Hipkins made three saves in her collegiate debut.
Despite the loss, W&J outshot Westminster 20-5 overall and 14-5 in terms of shots on goal.
The Presidents return to action next Sunday at Saint Vincent.
