LATROBE, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson College softball team traveled to Saint Vincent for a doubleheader Tuesday afternoon. The Presidents fell 14-6 in game one to the Bearcats. The two teams played to a wild 13-13 tie in game two as the contest was called due to darkness.
Game 1 – Saint Vincent 14, W&J 6 (6 Innings)
Defensive miscues plagued the Presidents in a 14-6 game one loss. The W&J committed seven errors and 12 of the 14 runs scored by Saint Vincent were unearned.
W&J opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the top of the first inning.
Peyton Eckenrode (York Haven, Pa./Northeastern) walked and scored on an RBI double by
Sarah Labbe (Belgrade, Maine/Messalonksee).
Brooke Stout (Berwick, Pa./Berwick Area Senior) followed with an RBI double to score Labbe.
SVC cut the W&J lead in half with a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the second inning. The Bearcats scored eight runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 9-2 lead. The Bearcats took advantage of four walks and two errors in the frame to put up a crooked number.
W&J countered back with a three-spot in the top of the fifth. Labbe laced an RBI single to score Eckenrode to make the score 9-3. Stout then followed with a three-run home run to bring the score to 9-6.
Saint Vincent finished off the six-inning victory with three runs in the bottom of the fifth and one in the sixth inning.
Stout paced the W&J offense with two hits and four RBI in the loss. Eckenrode and Labbe finished with two hits apiece as well.
Game 2 – W&J 13, Saint Vincent 13
The two teams combined for 26 runs and 34 hits in the nightcap. W&J led 4-0 after a two-run home run by
Kasey Scears (Washington, Pa./Chartiers Houston) in the top of the fourth inning. Saint Vincent used a six-run bottom of the fourth to take a 6-4 lead.
Breanna Thomas (Baden, Pa./Ambridge) and
Mollie Charlton (North Apollo, Pa./Apollo Ridge) each slugged two-run home runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to help W&J regain the lead at 8-6.
A two-run single by Scears highlighted a five-run sixth inning for the Presidents. That inning pushed the lead to 13-6. However, the hosts scored five in the bottom half of the inning to cut the deficit to 13-11. The Bearcats tacked on a pair of runs in the seventh to tie the score at 13-13. The game was then called due to darkness.
Eckenrode and Charlton both finished with three hits. Scears, Stout and
