WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson College men's soccer team continued its goal-scoring prowess and winning ways as the Presidents defeated Chatham 5-1 at Alexandre Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The victory moves W&J to 3-0 on the season as Chatham falls to 0-3. The Presidents have scored at least four goals in all three victories in the 2021 spring season.
The Presidents struck first in the eighth minute of the contest as
Thomas Davidson (Upper Saint Clair, Pa./Upper Saint Clair) intercepted a pass deep in Chatham territory, touched a pass to
Jayden Da (Rockville, Md./Richard Montgomery) who found a streaking
Jake Fetterman (Pottstown, Pa./The Hill School) inside the 18-yard box who buried an uncontested shot.
The Presidents extended their lead in the final minute of the first half. W&J was awarded a direct free kick just beyond the 18 in the final seconds of the half.
John Appiah (Greenville, S.C.) used a left-footed strike to tuck the ball inside the left post to give W&J a 2-0 lead with four seconds left in the half.
Zach Bowser (Beaver, Pa./Beaver Area) headed in W&J's third goal off a corner kick from Fetterman in the 53rd minute.
Chatham scored to make it 3-1 in the 57th minute, but the Presidents scored twice more in regulation.
Thomas Einolf (Carlisle, Pa./Middletown)blasted home a bouncing ball from 22 yards out to give W&J a 4-1 advantage in the 74th minute.
Parker Byas (Columbia, Md./Mount Saint Joseph) found a loose ball out of a free kick from midfield and fired home the game's final tally in the 83rd.
W&J held a 21-5 advantage in shots and an 8-3 edge in shots on goal.
Samuel Miller (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg) played the first half in goal for W&J and didn't see an opposing shot.
Ian Donlon (Latham, N.Y./Albany Academies) played the second half and made one save.
W&J returns to action Wednesday night at Waynesburg.
