WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Freshman forward
Jayden Da (Rockville, Md./Richard Montgomery) scored in the 101
st minute as the Washington & Jefferson College men's soccer team defeated Geneva 2-1 at Alexandre Stadium on Tuesday evening.
W&J (6-0-1, 6-0-1 PAC) handed Geneva (6-1, 6-1 PAC) its first loss and leaped to the top of the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) standings with 18 points.
Early in the second overtime,
Joey Feola (Carnegie, Pa./Central Catholic) sent a long throw in towards the front of the net.
John Appiah (Greenville, S.C.) redirected the ball away from the net, directly to Da, who fired in the game-ending goal from 18 yards out.
W&J struck first in the 32
nd minute as Feola sent a free kick from W&J's defensive third to the opposite 18 yard box.
Thomas Davidson (Upper Saint Clair, Pa./Upper Saint Clair) sized up the kick's final bounce and fired a left-footed strike into the back of the net for his third goal of the season to give W&J a 1-0 lead.
The Presidents would hold a one-goal advantage for over 50 minutes before Geneva found an equalizer in the 84
th minute. Avery Wenger crossed to Carnel Kerr for the game-tying goal late in the first half.
Geneva had several chances early in the first overtime as the Golden Tornadoes were fouled almost immediately outside the 18.
Samuel Miller (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg) made a pair of saves following the free kick and an ensuring corner kick to preserve the contest.
The Presidents managed three shots in the final two minutes of the first OT, but none found twine. Early in the second OT, W&J won a corner in Geneva territory that set up the game-winning sequence.
Both teams recorded 17 shots with Geneva holding a 9-5 edge in shots on goal.
Miller collected seven saves in the win.
The Presidents control their own destiny in terms of earning the regular season title and top overall seed. W&J hosts Bethany on Saturday and travels to Grove City next Friday.
