WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson College men's soccer team suffered its first defeat in over two calendar years against a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) opponent as the Presidents fell to Bethany 1-0 in overtime on Saturday afternoon.
W&J falls to 6-1-1 overall and in league play. Bethany moves to 3-4-1 overall and in PAC play.
Bethany found the game-winning goal six minutes and one second into overtime.
The Bison established an early rhythm, outshooting W&J 13-5 in the first half.
Samuel Miller (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg) made seven saves to keep the contest scoreless through the game's first 45 minutes.
In the second half, W&J held a slim 2-1 advantage in shots on goal. The second half proved to be physical and well-contested as four cards were given in the half.
Both of W&J's shots on goal in the second half came from freshman
Jayden Da (Rockville, Md./Richard Montgomery) in the 77
th and 79
th minutes, but both were saved.
In overtime neither team managed a shot over the first five minutes of play, but the Bison found their opportunity and scored a golden goal in the 97
th minute.
Bethany outshot the Presidents 20-10 and owned a 9-3 edge in shots on goal. Miller made eight saves for W&J.
The Presidents have clinched a top-four league finish and a spot in the PAC Tournament. W&J concludes its regular season on Friday evening at Grove City.
