W&J splits PAC doubleheader with Chatham

PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson College softball team split a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader with Chatham University on Tuesday evening at West Field.

Game 1 – W&J 6, Chatham 1

The Presidents scored first and never trailed in a 6-1 victory in game one. Alisha Kulka (Hanover, Pa./South Western) allowed just one run on five hits in 7.0 strong innings to record the victory in the circle for W&J.

W&J opened the scoring in the first inning when Peyton Eckenrode (York Haven, Pa./Northeastern) led off with a double and scored an unearned run on a Chatham error.

The host Cougars evened the score at 1-1 with a run in the bottom of the second inning.

Savannah Keough (Alexandria, Va./T.C. Williams) led off with a double and scored on a double by Brooke Stout (Berwick, Pa./Berwick Area Senior). The Stout double gave W&J the lead for good.

The Presidents tallied four runs on four hits in the fourth inning. Keough was right in the middle of things again, as her RBI single scored Kulka to make it 3-1. Sarah Labbe (Belgrade, Maine/Messalonksee) added two more with a two-run single that extended the lead to 5-1. Stout produced another RBI hit, as her single scored Stout to make it 6-1.

Breanna Thomas (Baden, Pa./Ambridge) finished with a team-high three hits. Stout and Keough each collected a pair of hits.

Game 2 – Chatham 1, W&J 0

Chatham scored the only run of game two in the bottom of the fourth inning. W&J probably had its best chance to score in the top of the sixth. The Presidents had runners at first and second with one out but could not plate the tying run.

Jordan Hinz (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) started in game two. The freshman allowed just one run on four hits in 4.2 innings.

The W&J offense just managed one hit in game two.

The Presidents (9-12-1) (1-5 PAC) host Saint Vincent for a doubleheader on Saturday, April 17. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
