WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson College softball team registered a pair of dramatic walk-off wins to allow the Red and Black to sweep Saint Vincent College in a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Brooks Park. W&J claimed game one by a 10-9 score before adding a 6-5 victory in eight innings in game two.
Game 1 - W&J 10, Saint Vincent 9
Peyton Eckenrode (York Haven, Pa./Northeastern) and
Sarah Labbe (Belgrade, Maine/Messalonksee) tormented Saint Vincent pitching during the doubleheader. The duo accounted for 11 hits and seven runs scored during the day.
Eckenrode doubled and scored on an RBI double by Labbe to give W&J a 1-0 lead in the first. A RBI single by
Breanna Thomas (Baden, Pa./Ambridge) extended the early edge to 2-0 after a frame. Saint Vincent battled back with a run in the top of the second and added four runs on four hits in the third to take a 5-2 lead. Eckenrode led off with a double and scored to cut the deficit to 5-3.
The Bearcats appeared poised to take control of game one after tacking on three more runs in the fifth, allowing the visitors to build a commanding 8-3 edge. However, the Presidents answered with three runs of their own in the bottom half of the frame. Eckenrode was right in the middle of things once again, as the sophomore singled to lead off the inning. After a walk to
Savannah Keough (Alexandria, Va./T.C. Williams), Labbe drilled a two-run double to the left center field gap to score Eckenrode and Keough.
Olivia Dewick (Pittsburgh, Pa./Keystone Oaks) produced an RBI single that cut the deficit to 8-6.
Saint Vincent quickly pushed its lead back to three runs (9-6) with a solo home run in the top of the sixth. However, the Presidents persisted through with their comeback. After two quick outs to start the bottom of the sixth, Eckenrode ignited another rally by reaching base on a single and advancing to second on a wild pitch. Keough drew another walk to put two runners on. Labbe and
Brooke Stout (Berwick, Pa./Berwick Area Senior) followed with respective RBI singles to draw W&J within a run at 9-8.
Trailing by a run, Dewick drew a four-pitch leadoff walk and
Brooke McCleester (Johnstown, Pa./Conemaugh Valley) was hit by a pitch to start the rally for W&J in the seventh.
Marissa Rush called upon freshman
Haylee Holman (Baden, Pa./Ambridge) to pinch hit. Holman battled her way to a 2-2 count and then ripped a single to left field to load the bases with no outs. Rush then summoned
Kasey Scears (Washington, Pa./Chartiers Houston) from the bench to pinch hit. Scears singled into shallow left to score Dewick and tie the score at 9-9. That set the stage for Eckenrode once again. Eckenrode was hit by the pitch to score McCleester and give W&J a dramatic 10-9 game one victory.
Eckenrode finished game one with a 4-for-4 performance and four runs scored. Labbe was locked in at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles and four RBI in the opener. Thomas added a multi-hit effort as W&J racked up 13 hits in total.
Sydney Petrowski (Lemont Furnace, Pa./Connellsville) earned the victory out of the bullpen. The freshman tossed 2.2 effective innings to move to 2-0 on the season.
Game 2 - W&J 6, Saint Vincent 5 (8 Innings)
Eckenrode started things for the Presidents early in game two as well. After SVC scored first in the top of the first, Eckenrode quickly evened the score with a solo home run to start the bottom of the frame. Eckenrode then gave W&J a 2-1 lead when she singled home McCleester in the second.
Saint Vincent regained a one-run lead (3-2) with a pair of RBI hits in the fifth inning. Holman, getting a start in game two, answered the call with an RBI double to tie the game. Dewick then doubled home Holman and scored on a wild pitch to give W&J a 5-3 lead after five complete innings.
The Bearcats plated single runs in the fifth and sixth to tie the score at 5-5 and force extra innings. Saint Vincent loaded the bases with one out in the top of the eighth. However, Petrowski escaped unscathed with the jam with the score tied.
Petrowski then helped herself at the plate in the bottom of the eighth. The freshman, who was batting for just the fifth time this season, hit an opposite field leadoff double down the right field line. A single by McCleester put runners on the corners with no outs. Saint Vincent appeared poised to escape a jam of their own, as the Bearcats retired the next two W&J batters. Rush then called upon Stout to pinch hit. Stout singled to left to bring home Petrowski and give W&J its second straight walkoff win.
Petrowski, once again pitching in relief, earned the victory in the circle in game two as well. The freshman allowed just one earned run in 2.0 innings of work.
Dewick finished with three hits in game two to pace the offense. Eckenrode, Labbe and McCleester had two hits apiece in the nightcap.
The sweep moves W&J to 11-12-1 overall and 3-5 in PAC play. The win was the first for W&J over Saint Vincent since 2016. The last time that W&J swept Saint Vincent in a doubleheader was during the 2013 season.
W&J travels to Waynesburg for a league doubleheader on Sunday, April 18.
