WAYNESBURG, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson College softball team completed a perfect 4-0 weekend with a road sweep over Waynesburg University on Sunday afternoon. The Presidents won 8-2 in game one before beating the Yellow Jackets by a 6-3 score in game two.
The wins improve W&J to 5-5 in PAC play and 13-12-1 overall. The losses drop Waynesburg to 2-6 in conference games and 11-15 overall.
Game 1 – W&J 8, Waynesburg 2
The Presidents offense stayed hot in game one of the doubleheader with the Yellow Jackets. Coming off of a strong showing in Saturday's sweep of Saint Vincent, the W&J offense touched up Waynesburg pitching for eight runs on 14 hits.
Peyton Eckenrode (York Haven, Pa./Northeastern) continued her strong weekend at the plate, as the sophomore tallied three more hits in game one.
Brooke McCleester (Johnstown, Pa./Conemaugh Valley) put together a 3-for-4 effort at the plate with a pair of runs scored.
Mollie Charlton (North Apollo, Pa./Apollo Ridge) added a triple and a team-high three RBI.
Brooke Stout (Berwick, Pa./Berwick Area Senior) and
Sarah Labbe (Belgrade, Maine/Messalonksee) finished with two hits apiece.
The Presidents tallied an unearned run in the second to take a 1-0 lead. W&J tacked on three runs on three hits in the top of the fourth. McCleester singled and scored on a sac fly by Charlton. Later in the inning, Labbe laced an RBI single.
W&J scored four more runs in the top of the fifth inning. McCleester brought home
Breanna Thomas (Baden, Pa./Ambridge) with an RBI double to make the score 5-1. Charlton smacked a two-run triple that scored
Alisha Kulka (Hanover, Pa./South Western) and McCleester to extend the lead to 7-1. An RBI double by Eckenrode plated Charlton to make it 8-1.
Waynesburg tallied the game's final run to close the score at 8-2.
Kulka worked 7.0 strong innings to record the victory in the circle. The junior limited Waynesburg to two runs on six hits. She struck out one and walked one.
Game 2 – W&J 6, Waynesburg 3
W&J opened the scoring in game two with a run in the top of the first. Eckenrode walked and advanced to second on a sac bunt by
Savannah Keough (Alexandria, Va./T.C. Williams). Labbe brought home Eckenrode with an RBI double. The double was her PAC leading 12th double of the season for Labbe.
The Presidents scored three more runs in the second inning to take a 4-0 lead. After back-to-back singles by McCleester and Charlton opened the frame, Keough produced an RBI single to make it 2-0. Labbe would follow with an RBI single of her own to make it 3-0. The Presidents stole a run when Labbe got caught in a rundown and Keough raced home to make it 4-0 Presidents.
Waynesburg cut the W&J lead (4-2) in half with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third. W&J got one back in the fourth after singles by McCleester and Eckenrode set up a scoring opportunity. An RBI groundout by Keough scored McCleester to make it 5-2.
The Yellow Jackets would put the tying run on base in the bottom of the sixth but
Jordan Hinz (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) escaped with a 5-3 lead intact.
W&J tacked on an insurance run in the top of the seventh inning. The Presidents opened the frame with back-to-back singles by Labbe and
Haylee Holman (Baden, Pa./Ambridge). Stout drilled a pinch hit single into left field to score Labbe and extend the lead to 6-3.
Sydney Petrowski (Lemont Furnace, Pa./Connellsville) pitched a scoreless bottom half to earn her first collegiate save. Hinz earned the victory with 6.0 strong innings in the circle. Hinz allowed three runs (two earned) and scattered eight hits.
Labbe finished with three hits and two RBI in game two. Eckenrode and McCleester tallied multi-hit efforts as well.
W&J continues its push for a spot in the PAC Tournament with PAC doubleheaders this week with Thiel, Franciscan and Grove City.
