WASHINGTON, Pa. --
Sarah Labovitz (Great Falls, Va./The Bullis School) and
Amanda Effland (Frederick, Md./Frederick) combined to score 11 goals as the Washington & Jefferson College women's lacrosse team used a strong offensive showing to beat Chatham University by a 20-11 score Wednesday night at Alexandre Stadium.
The win improves W&J to 4-0 in PAC play and 6-0 overall. The Presidents take sole possession of first place with the win over Chatham, who drops to 3-1 in the conference and 5-2 overall.
The game was back and forth early on, as the Presidents built a 4-3 lead with 17:26 to play in the first half. W&J took control by scoring five of the final six goals to build a 9-4 advantage at halftime. Labovitz sparked the run by scoring four of the five W&J goals during that stretch.
Aisa Uhler (East Lansing, Mich./East Lansing) added the other score.
That momentum carried over into the second half, as
Clara Sherwood (Indiana, Pa./Indiana) and Uhler scored back to back to stretch the W&J lead to 11-4. After a Chatham goal cut the deficit to six, Effland took over by scoring four of the next five goals for the Red and Black. Effland scored off a pass from Uhler to stretch the advantage to 16-8 with 6:17 to play.
Back-to-back goals from
Becca Ghion (Sutersville, Pa./Yough) and Labovitz extended the Presidents' lead to nine goals (18-9) at the 3:32 mark. A late score by Sherwood in the waning seconds put the final score at 20-11.
Labovitz filled the stat sheet with a game-high 10 points (6 goals, 4 assists) to go along with five ground balls and four draw controls.
Effland finished with a solid performance of her own, as the sophomore finished with nine points (5 goals, 4 assists). Uhler scored four goals and added an assist to finish with five points.
Sofia Jenkins (Hughesville, Md./The Calverton School) was a catalyst for W&J's strong midfield play. The freshman paced the Presidents with highs in draw controls (7) and caused turnovers (4).
Sam Casile (New Kensington, Pa./Plum) was a force defensively, as the sophomore registered six ground balls and four caused turnovers.
Kaitlyn Brown earned another victory in goal. Brown recorded seven saves and picked up four ground balls during 60 minutes of action.
