WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson College men's lacrosse team lost by a 19-8 score to first place Grove City College in a Presidents' Athletic Conference match on Saturday afternoon at Alexandre Stadium.
W&J honored its seniors class before the match. That group includes
Nicholas Grosch (Sarasota, Fla./Butler),
Grant Allison (Venetia, Pa./Carson Long Military Institute),
Brendan Tribeck (Enola, Pa./Trinity),
Liam Sullivan (Hingham, Mass./Xaverian Brothers),
Jake Duda (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township,
Reilly Oliverio (Carlisle, Pa./Trinity) and
Pat Brunner (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Saint Joseph).
The Presidents and Wolverines battled through a competitive first quarter, as the match was tied 3-3 after the first 15 minutes of play. Tribeck scored off a pass from
Alex Strain (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper Saint Clair) to even the score at 1-1. After back-to-back scores by the Wolverines, W&J countered with a pair of late first quarter goals to even the score. Sullivan scored off an assist from Strain before Tribeck beat the first quarter buzzer to score an unassisted tally to the the score at 3-3.
Grove City took control of the match with nine of the 10 second quarter goals to take a commanding 12-4 lead at halftime. The Wolverines used a strong third quarter to extend the lead to 18-5 as the teams headed to the fourth. W&J tallied three of the four goals in the fourth to close the score at 19-8. Strain scored all three goals for W&J in the fourth.
Tribeck finished with a team-high six points (2g, 4a) while Strain added five (3g, 2a). Oliverio registered two goals to aid the offense. Grosch picked up six ground balls while
Luke Geister (Mechanincsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) had six ground balls and three caused turnovers.
Brody Alloway (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) finished with a season-high 14 saves as he worked 60 minutes in net.
The loss drops the Presidents to 2-2 in PAC play and 3-4 overall. Grove City improves to 5-0 in league matches and 8-1 overall.
W&J will conclude its regular season with a match at Bethany College on Saturday, May 1. Start time is scheduled for 5 p.m.
