WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson College softball team opened Presidents' Athletic Conference play on Tuesday afternoon at Brooks Park. The Presidents fell by scores of 6-0 and 11-1 in the conference openers for both teams.
The losses drop W&J to 0-2 in league play and 8-9-1 overall. The Titans start league play with a 2-0 record and stay unbeaten at 18-0 overall.
Game One - Westminster 6, W&J 0
The Titans opened the scoring in the first inning of game one when the visitors tallied an unearned run after a Presidents error. Westminster added two runs in the fourth to make the score 3-0. Back-to-back home runs in the sixth strengthened the Titans lead to 5-0 lead. Westminster added another unearned run in the seventh to close out the scoring.
W&J left seven runners on base in game one and had just one hit in 15 at-bats runners on base.
Alisha Kulka (Hanover, Pa./South Western) took the loss in the circle. Kulka gave up six runs (four earned) on nine hits.
Mollie Charlton (North Apollo, Pa./Apollo-Ridge) was a bright spot offensively, as the sophomore finished with two hits to pace the offensive efforts.
Game Two - Westminster 11, W&J 1 (6 Innings)
Westminster scored 11 runs on 20 hits in the nightcap to earn the six-inning victory. The Presidents opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning by manufacturing a run. After a 1-2-3 top of the first,
Peyton Eckenrode (York Haven, Pa./Northeastern) drew a leadoff walk. She moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt and later scored on a sacrifice fly by
Brooke Stout (Berwick, Pa./Berwick Area Senior) to give W&J a 1-0 lead.
The Titans tied the score with a run in the top of the third. W&J had a chance to regain the lead in the bottom of the frame after back-to-back hits by Charlton and Eckenrode to start the inning. The runners moved to second and third after a sacrifice bunt by
Savannah Keough (Alexandria, Va./TC Williams). However, W&J missed a chance to score as the next two batters popped up to end the threat.
Westminster gained a 4-1 lead with three in the fourth inning. The Titans then scored two runs on five hits in the fifth to extend the edge to 6-1. Westminster finished off the victory with a five-spot in the sixth.
Charlton finished the day with three hits in five at-bats after adding a hit in game two.
Jordan Hinz (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) suffered the loss in the circle in game two.
W&J will look to regroup as they host Bethany College on Wednesday at Brooks Park. First pitch for the PAC doubleheader is scheduled for 3 p.m.
