WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson College softball team fell in a pair of Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) games against Bethany on Wednesday afternoon.
The Presidents fall to 0-4 in conference play and 8-11-1 overall. Bethany rises to 12-10, 4-0 in PAC play.
Game one - Bethany 6, W&J 0
Bethany pitcher Josie Wise toss a two-hit shutout for the visitors as Bethany emerged with a game one win.
Sarah Labbe (Belgrade, Maine/Messalonksee) singled in the first inning and
Mollie Charlton (North Apollo, Pa./Apollo Ridge) doubled in the fifth, but the Presidents stranded all four of their baserunners in game one.
Bethany scratched across runs in the third and fourth inning before plating three unearned runs in the fifth and tacking one on in the sixth.
W&J pitcher
Alisha Kulka (Hanover, Pa./South Western) pitched all seven innings and allowed three earned runs.
Game two - Bethany 3, W&J 2
The Bison took an early 1-0 lead with an unearned run in the top of the first inning. Bethany extended its lead to 2-0 in the third.
The Presidents loaded the bases in the bottom of the third without registering a hit. Bethany turned to Wise to return to the circle to pitch the Bison out of the jam.
The Presidents scored their first run of the day with
Brooke McCleester (Johnstown, Pa./Conemaugh Valley) racing home on a dropped infield fly to cut the deficit to 2-1, but were unable to add any more tallies in the third.
The Presidents opened the fourth with back-to-back singles by
Olivia Dewick (Pittsburgh, Pa./Keystone Oaks) and
Kasey Scears (Washington, Pa./Charters Houston) , but the Presidents were unable to tie the game.
Bethany added an unearned run on a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning to extend its lead to 3-1.
Haylee Holman (Baden, Pa./Ambridge) doubled to lead off the home half of the sixth. Dewick reached on a fielding error and Scears singled home Holman to make it a 3-2 ballgame. Bethany ended the inning with a double play as pinch runner
Kate Barone (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) tried to score on a pop out in shallow center field.
In the bottom of the seventh, Payton Eckenrode (York Haven, Pa./Northeastern) singled with one out and then advance to third on a two out double by Labbe. Holman came to the plate with two outs and the tying and winning runs in scoring position, but fouled out to end the game.

Jordan Hinz (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) allowed one earned run in seven innings of work.
W&J travels to Franciscan on Saturday.
