WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson College women's tennis team suffered a 5-4 setback to visiting Franciscan University of Steubenville in a Presidents' Athletic Conference match at the Janet Swanson Tennis Center.
The loss drops W&J to 2-2 overall and 2-2 in PAC play. Franciscan moves to 4-0 in conference matches and 4-1 overall.
Franciscan opened the match by taking two of the three doubles matches. The Presidents picked up a victory at third doubles as
Bella Goldman (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper Saint Clair) and
Lisha Chadda (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Eastern) fought hard for an 8-7 (7-4).
In singles play,
Maya Krishnasamy (Ventura, Calif./Ventura) cruised to a straight set win at first singles. Krishnasamy won by set scores of 6-0 and 6-2. Goldman overcame a loss in the first set to rally back for victory. Goldman breezed to a 6-0 victory in the second set before winning 10-8 in the third set tiebreaker.
Libby Conlon (Renfrew, Pa./Knoch) won 6-4 and 6-1 at sixth singles. The match was decided at fifth singles, where
Julia Schaffer () fought valiantly in a third set tiebreaker loss. Schaffer won the first set 6-4 but fell 6-4 in the second and 10-7 in the tiebreaker.
W&J hosts Thiel College on Wednesday at 12 p.m.
