W&J and Franciscan play to 1-1 double overtime draw

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio – The Washington & Jefferson men's soccer team played through a 1-1 double overtime tie with host Franciscan University of Steubenville in a Presidents' Athletic Conference match on Wednesday evening.

W&J is now 4-0-1 while Franciscan is 2-2-1 for the spring 2021 season.

The Presidents cracked the scoreboard first on an unassisted goal by freshman Jayden Da (Rockville, Md./Richard Montgomery) in the 35th minute of play.

That was the third time that Da has found the scoresheet in five collegiate matches. Da currently leads the Presidents in goals (4) and points (12).

Franciscan evened the score with a goal by Jair Mautone in the 65th minute. Both teams had several scoring opportunities over the final 25 minutes of regulation. However, the score remained tied and the match headed to overtime. Neither team was able to tally the golden goal over the two 10-minute overtime sessions and both teams earned a point following the tie.

Samuel Miller (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg) made a season-high 12 saves in goal for W&J. The 12 saves were the second most by Miller, who recorded 13 saves in the first round of the 2019 NCAA Tournament against John Carroll.

Da and Jake Fetterman (Pottstown, Pa./The Hill School) paced the offense with four shots each. All four of Da's shots were on goal.

Franciscan held advantages in shots (17-15), shots on goal (13-7) while W&J held an 8-6 edge in corner kicks.

W&J hosts Thiel College for Senior Day on Saturday, April 10. The conference match will kick off at 1 p.m. at Alexandre Stadium.
