W&J drops high-scoring Empire 8 opener at Utica

UTICA, N.Y. -- Utica College tallied four of the final five goals to outlast the Washington & Jefferson College field hockey team by a 6-3 score in Empire 8 Conference play Saturday in New York.

The Pioneers opened the scoring with a goal in the third minute of play. Madeline Krecidlo was able to find an open spot in the net after she received a pass from teammate Sydney Scaccia.

The Presidents scored the second goal of the game, just three minutes to even the score. Freshman forward Hailey Wachowiak (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) scored the goal with the assist coming from junior Lindsey Diggan (Sinking Springs, Pa./ Governor Mifflin) to tie the Pioneers, 1-1.

Utica responded almost immediately, scoring in the seventh minute of action to regain the lead at 2-1.

Then in the ninth minute of play, a penalty stroke goal by junior Lina Crowley (Potomac, Md./ Bullis School), tied the score once again to make it 2-2 to finish the first quarter.

Utica scored back-to-back goals, first with one in the 23rd minute and another in the 31st minute, to take a 4-2 edge. Diggan answered with a goal off an assist from Crowley in the 33rd minute of play to narrow the deficit to 4-3. However, the host Pioneers tallied scores in the 42nd and 60th minute to put the game out of reach.

Sophomore goalkeeper Anastasia Godat (Baltimore, Md./Concordia Preparatory School) recorded five saves for the Presidents.

The two teams were tied for shots but Utica held the advantage on penalty corners (11-2) during the match.

W&J travels to Gambier, Ohio this Tuesday Sept. 14 to face-off against Kenyon College in a non-conference match. The game is scheduled for a 5:30 PM start time.
