WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Carnegie Mellon University scored once in the first half and added two more goals in the second half to defeat the Washington & Jefferson College men's soccer team by a 3-0 score in non-conference play Wednesday night at Alexandre Stadium.
Both teams got off to a slow start offensively, taking nearly 11 minutes for either team to register a shot on goal. The best chance of the night for the Presidents came from senior
Michael Komaniak (Oakmont, Pa./ Riverview) when he shot a line drive to the left of the goal before being saved by Stefan Sorobay in the 15th minute.
The visiting Tartans broke the ice in the 22nd minute of play when Dante Mancini launched the ball perfectly into the air over the Presidents defenders and Ryan Tarr lightly kicked it into the right side of the goal. The two other goals came in the 53rd and 88th minute, respectively. The Presidents were shut out for a second consecutive game as the Tartans out-shot the Presidents by a 23-4 margin.
The majority of the Presidents offensive pressure came from Komaniak and sophomore
McKinley Joseph (Stamford, Conn./ King School), who combined to register a total of three shots on the net.
Senior goalkeeper Sam Miller (Lewisburg, Pa./ Lewisburg) kept the Presidents in the game by making seven saves during 90 minutes of work.
W&J will return to Alexandre Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 18 to face off against Mount Union. The Presidents will take on the Purple Raiders at 1 PM.
