All-around team effort helps W&J earn dominant 4-0 win over Houghton

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Junior Lina Crowley (Potomac, Md./The Bullis School) tallied two goals and senior Madeline Hubbard (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg) recorded three assists to lead the Washington & Jefferson College field hockey team to a dominant 4-0 shutout victory of Houghton College in Empire 8 play Saturday at Cameron Stadium.

Hubbard and Crowley set the tone early and helped W&J get off to a fast start in the conference victory. In the fourth minute of play, Crowley drilled home her first goal of the day following a penalty corner pass from Hubbard. In the second quarter, Crowley scored again, firing home her second goal of the day off of a penalty corner insert from Hubbard. The goal, which came in the 25th minute, helped W&J take a 2-0 lead into halftime.

Sophomore Hailey Wachowiak (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) tallied her fifth goal of the season to extend the W&J lead to 3-0 late in the third. Wachowiak found the back of the net in the 44th minute, scoring from close range after the third assist of the game for Hubbard.

Junior forward Sarah Labovitz (Great Falls, Va./The Bullis School) registered her first collegiate goal in the 55th minute to cap the 4-0 victory. Labovitz, playing in her first game with the team, scored off an assist from sophomore midfielder Emily Heck (Reading, Pa./Berks Catholic).

Sophomore goalkeeper Anastasia Godat (Baltimore, Md./Concordia Prep) earned her first collegiate shutout in goal for W&J. Aiding the defensive efforts was senior Tiana Swierski (Phoenix, Ariz./Hammond (Md.), who recorded a defensive save late in the second quarter to help W&J preserve its shutout.

The Presidents held statistical advantages in shots (15-4) and penalty corners (5-3).

The victory evens W&J's conference record at 1-1. The loss drops the visiting Highlanders to 1-1 in E8 play.

W&J hosts Allegheny College for a non-conference match on Wednesday, Sept. 22. Start time is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Cameron Stadium.
