Allegheny uses back-to-back goals to rally past W&J in 2-1 victory

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Allegheny College used a pair of goals by Bella Cowen to erase a third quarter deficit and defeat the Washington & Jefferson College field hockey team by a 2-1 score in non-conference action Thursday evening at Cameron Stadium.

The two teams played through a competitive but scoreless first half. Allegheny registered all five penalty corner opportunities during the first 30 minutes. Both teams recorded six shots (three shots on goal) during the first half of play.

A little more than five minutes into the third quarter, W&J gained its first penalty corner opportunity of the game. The Presidents made the most of the chance, as junior Lindsey Diggan (Sinking Spring, Pa./Governor Mifflin) found the right post after a pass from classmate Lina Crowley (Potomac, Md./The Bullis School) in the 36th minute.

Cowen helped Allegheny even the score less than four minutes later, as she finished bottom left after Hannah Sharp corralled a failed clear attempt by W&J. Cowen found the back of the cage again with just three seconds left in the third quarter. Cowen scored off a pass from Hana Miller after a penalty corner opportunity for the Gators.

W&J dominated the fourth quarter, as they registered all four shots and gained six penalty corner chances. However, the visiting Gators were up to the task defensively and closed out the victory.

The Presidents held slight advantages in shots (12-9) and penalty corners (8-7). Both teams put six shots on goal. Allegheny held a narrow 5-4 edge in saves.

Sophomore forward Hailey Wachowiak (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) led W&J with four shots and three shots on goal.

The W&J defense, led by seniors Ashley Kunkle (East Berlin, Pa./Bermudian Springs) and Tiana Swierski (Phoenix, Ariz./Hammond (Md.) played a strong 60 minutes.

Sophomore goalkeeper Anastasia Godat (Baltimore, Md./Concordia Prep) finished with four saves on the night.

W&J hosts Hartwick for a Empire 8 Conference contest on Saturday, Sept. 25. Start time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
