Field Hockey falls short in 3-1 loss to Hartwick

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Two late fourth quarter goals helped visiting Hartwick earn a 3-1 victory over the Washington & Jefferson College field hockey team Saturday night in an Empire 8 Conference match at Cameron Stadium.

Hartwick controlled play throughout the night, as they held advantages in shots (17-5), shots on goal (7-3) and penalty corners (11-5).

A goal by Lex Matarazzo staked the Hawks to a 1-0 lead with less than two minutes remaining in the first quarter.

The Presidents were able to stay within striking distance for the majority of the game, using strong defensive play from the entire unit, which included Ashley Kunkle (East Berlin, Pa./Bermudian Springs) and Ella Phillips (Arnold, Md./Broadneck). Sophomore goalkeeper Anastasia Godat (Baltimore, Md./Concordia Prep) made four stops in net.

Despite a few scoring chances, W&J was unable to even the score. Hartwick tallied a pair of late fourth quarter goals, both off of penalty corner chances, to put the game out of reach. Julie Ruzzi (55th minute) and Holly Calore (57th minute) tallied the respective scores for the Hawks.

W&J was able to spoil the shutout for Hartwick, as the Red and Black scored with less than two minutes remaining. Lindsey Diggan (Sinking Spring, Md./Governor Mifflin) found the back of the net with 1:10 to play in the match. The goal was the second in as many games for Diggan and her third of the season. Madeline Hubbard (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg) tallied the assist on the Diggan score.

The loss drops W&J to 1-2 in E8 play while Hartwick is 1-0 in conference games.

W&J travels to Elmira College for a league matchup with the Soaring Eagles on Saturday, Oct. 2.
