W&J splits on Sunday with win over Division II Mercyhurst


ERIE, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson men's water polo team split a pair of matches in Mid-Atlantic Water Polo West-Region Conference action Sunday at the Hallman Aquatics Center in Erie, Pa. 
 
After four matches this weekend, W&J's record sits at 5-5 overall. The Presidents will travel to Southern California for four matches at the Gary Troyer Tournament on Oct. 1-2. W&J is scheduled to face Occidental, Caltech, Westcliff and La Verne.
 

Sunday Recap
 
W&J 10, Mercyhurst 9
 
A stellar performance in goal by Zishuo Ma (Los Alamitos, Calif./Los Alamitos) propelled the Presidents to a 10-9 victory over Division II Mercyhurst in the Sunday opener. 
 
Ma recorded 14 saves in the net to power W&J to the victory over the Lakers. The win snapped an 11-game losing streak to Mercyhurst, which spanned back to November 2015. 
 
Cam Spicer (Lansing, Mich./East Lansing) paced the offense with four goals. Chris Edwards (Columbus, Ohio/St. Charles Prep) tallied a pair of scores while four others registered a goal each. The four others to reach the scoresheet were Mitchell Rubio (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny), Andrew Edwards (Columbus, Ohio/St. Charles Prep), Anthony Ames (Canyon County, Calif./Canyon) and Aiden Johnson (Nassau, Bahamas/Windsor).
 
Salem 16, W&J 9
 
Chris Edwards led the Presidents with three goals during the 16-9 loss to Salem that wrapped up the weekend of competition. Ames added a pair of scores while four other Presidents added a goal each.
 
Ma recorded 12 saves in goal for W&J. 
 

Saturday Recap
 
Gannon 14, W&J 8
 
W&J dropped a 14-8 decision to Gannon on Saturday. Andrew Edwards and Spicer registered a pair of goals for the Presidents. Ma posted 18 saves against the Knights. 
 
 
McKendree 20, W&J 5
 
Ma recorded 14 more saves against McKendree. Spicer recorded a team-high two goals. Ryan Bannon (Broomfield, Colo./Broomfield), Kyle Rubenstein (Abington, Pa./Upper Dublin) and Rubio tallied a goal each as well.
