Wachowiak registers hat trick as W&J drops overtime thriller to Wooster, 4-3

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Sophomore forward Hailey Wachowiak (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) scored a hat trick in her first collegiate game as the Washington & Jefferson field hockey team suffered a 4-3 overtime setback to the College of Wooster on Saturday afternoon at Cameron Stadium.

There was a lot of anticipation and build up to Saturday's game and it surely delivered. The game was the first for the Presidents since Nov. 2, 2019, a span of 672 days since the Red and Black last took the field at Cameron Stadium.

Wooster built an early lead when Katie Agatucci scored in just the third minute of play. The Fighting Scots doubled their advantage a little more than five minutes later, as Jill Murray scored off a touch pass from Caitlyn O'Connor to give the visitors a 2-0 lead.

W&J cut its deficit in half a little more than two minutes later. A deflection by Wachowiak off a shot by Lina Crowley (Potomac, Md./The Bullis School) made the score 2-1 in the 10th minute of play.

Early in the second quarter, Murray extended the Wooster lead back to two goals (3-1) when she collected a loose ball in front of the cage and scored. The Fighting Scots would maintain the two-goal advantage until Wachowiak did more damage in the fourth quarter.

Wachowiak corralled a pass from junior Lindsay Meyer (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper Saint Clair) and scored to bring W&J within one. Later in the fourth, Wachowiak provided more dramatics, as the first-year player stole the ball around midfield and raced downfield for a one-on-one scoring opportunity to tie the game. Wachowiak made a move and blasted the ball into the back of the cage to tie the score at 3-3.

Wooster capitalized on a few scoring opportunities to earn the victory in overtime. Agatucci found the back of the cage for her second goal of the day. The Agatucci game winner came just 3:49 into overtime.

Wachowiak led the Presidents with her first collegiate hat trick in her first collegiate game. It was the first three-goal performance since Alana Boyd scored three against Elmira on Oct. 27, 2018. Wachowiak also tallied a game-high six shots for the Red and Black. Crowley registered an assist and four shots.

Sophomore goalkeeper Anastasia Godat (Baltimore, Md./Concordia Prep) made 10 saves in 63-plus minutes of work.

Wooster held stat advantages in shots (18-12), shots on goal (15-11) and penalty corners (12-8).

W&J opens up Empire 8 play on the road against Utica College on Saturday, Sept 11. The match is slated for a 12 p.m. start.
