W&J volleyball concludes tourney play at 2021 BSN Sports River City Classic

MARIETTA, Ohio -- The Washington & Jefferson College volleyball team dropped a pair of matches Saturday afternoon at the BSN River City Classic, which was hosted by Marietta College in Ohio. The Presidents suffered a four-set setback to Franklin to open their day before falling in three sets to Capital.

Franklin 3, W&J 1  (8-25, 22-25, 25-22, 21-25)

After claiming the first set with ease by a score of 25-8, Franklin hardly edged out W&J in the second set by a score of 25-22. The Presidents reversed roles and claimed the third set by a 25-22 score, sending them to a fourth set. The Presidents fought hard, but Franklin took home the final set by a 25-21 score.

Sophomore middle hitter Jada Benning (San Antonio, Texas/ Hayfield Secondary School (Va.)) led the team with nine kills while freshman outside hitter Jaden Blough (Meyersdale, Pa./ Meyersdale) was right behind with eight kills. Senior setter Alexis Tomassini (Gettysburg, Pa./ Gettysburg) recorded the team high of 28 assists as junior outside hitter Ashley Bertling (Berkley, Mich./ Berkley) recorded the team high of three service aces.  Sophomore libero Gianna Platt (Pittsburgh, Pa./ OLSH) tallied a team-best 19 digs.

Capital 3, W&J 0 (20-25, 20-25, 17-25)

The Presidents led the first set through the first seven points. However, Capital's Miranda Jordan served back to back service aces giving the Crusaders the momentum they needed. Once Capital passed W&J, W&J was never able to regain the lead.

The third set was once again competitive, as the red and black kept the game in between three points for the majority of the match.

Tomassini registered a match-high 21 assists. Platt led W&J with 14 digs against the Crusaders. Bertling, Benning, and Blough all registered five kills apiece in the second match of the day.

W&J (0-5 overall) is back on the road Wednesday, September 8th traveling to Cresson, Pa where they will be playing against Mount Aloysius. This non-conference match is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
