Late goal helps St. John Fisher past W&J, 2-1

WASHINGTON, Pa -- A goal in the 87th minute helped visiting St. John Fisher break a tie and beat the Washington & Jefferson College women's soccer team by a 2-1 score Saturday afternoon at Alexandre Stadium.

The visiting Cardinals scored the first goal of the game in the 57th minute of play. Jessica Aldred had a clean breakaway and launched the ball into the net to give St. John Fisher the edge.

W&J countered with a goal from freshman midfielder Olivia Olsen (Boiling Springs, Pa./Boyertown Area) in the 82nd minute of play. The Olsen goal, which was set up by an excellent corner kick from senior Katie Hahn (Volant, Pa./Wilmington), tied the score at 1-1.

However, St. John Fisher regained the lead a few minutes later when Carli Kovarik gathered a rebound and sent the ball into the net in the 87th minute. The visitors were able to make the lead stand up as they earned the 2-1 victory.

Olsen led W&J offensivley with her goal and one shot on goal. Katie Brown (Mechanicsburg, Pa/ Cumberland Valley), and Kayla Daugherty (Prospect, Pa./ Slippery Rock Area) also recorded one shot on goal each. Hahn had an assist on the Olsen goal.

Sophomore goalkeeper Abby Hipkins (Canonsburg, Pa./ Canon-McMillan) recorded three saves in 90 minutes of action in net.

W&J is back in action tomorrow and will travel to New Concord, Ohio where they will be playing Muskingum in a non conference match. The game is scheduled to start at 3:00 PM.
