WOOSTER, Ohio -- The Washington & Jefferson College field hockey team dropped a 2-1 decision in overtime on the road to the College of Wooster in a non-conference match Wednesday evening.
The loss snapped the Presidents' three-match winning streak. W&J is now 5-7 overall in 2022. The victory improves Wooster to 5-8 overall.
After a scoreless first quarter, W&J cracked the scoreboard first when
Camryn Cresci (Wilmington, Del./Alexis I. DuPont) deflected home a feed from
Lina Crowley (Potomac, Md. / Bullis School), who was credited with an assist on the play. The Cresci goal, which was her fourth of the season, came with less than five minutes remaining in the second quarter.
The Presidents held the lead until the final seconds of the third quarter when a giveaway in the defensive zone led to a Fightin' Scots goal. Maddie Peek stole a W&J pass and shuffled the ball forwards to Mary Johnson, who scored the equalizer with just 18 seconds remaining in the quarter.
W&J controlled play in the fourth quarter, as they tallied all five shots and both penalty corners during the 15 minutes. The Presidents nearly scored the go-ahead goal when
Lindsey Diggan (Sinking Spring, Pa./Governor Mifflin) tried to jam in a shot less than two minutes into the quarter. The play drew a penalty stroke for the Presidents but Crowley's attempt was saved by Wooster goalkeeper Zoe Semersky. W&J had two more shots blocked during the frame and the match headed to overtime.
Overtime sessions have not been kind to the Presidents this fall, as W&J has lost twice in overtime and suffered another defeat via shootout. After nearly eight minutes of limited offensive action, Wooster drew two penalty corner attempts. The Fightin' Scots scored off of the second attempt, as Lucy Agurkis found the back of the cage with just 1:27 showing on the clock in the first overtime.
Wooster held slight advantages in shots (16-13) and shots on goal (7-5). W&J produced a 7-5 advantage in penalty corner opportunities.
Diggan matched the game-high with five shots while Crowley added three.
Anastasia Godat (Baltimore, Md./Concordia Preparatory School) made five saves in net.
W&J returns to Empire 8 play when they travel to Hartwick College on Oct. 15. Start time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
