WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson volleyball team completed a season sweep of Waynesburg by winning in straight sets Wednesday evening in a Presidents' Athletic Conference match at Salvitti Family Gymnasium.
The win improved W&J to 11-8 overall and 3-4 in PAC play. The loss drops Waynesburg to 3-19 overall and 1-6 in league matches.
W&J breezed to victory with set wins of 25-14, 25-19 and 25-13. The Presidents controlled the match from the outset, as the contest featured just three ties and two lead changes.
In the opening set, W&J posted a .333 hitting percentage and finished with 14 kills and just two errors. After Waynesburg tallied the first two points of the match, W&J responded with 10 straight to take a commanding lead. A pair of service aces by
Faith Fetsko (South Park, Pa./South Park) eventually swelled the W&J lead to 17-5. The lead reached as many as 12 points on three more occasions before W&J finished off the opening set with a kill by Fetsko.
W&J led from the entirety of the second set. The home team tallied seven of the first 10 points to take a 7-3 advantage on a service ace by
Piper McFarland (West Mifflin, Pa./Cornerstone Preparatory Academy). A little later,
Beyonce Pierce (Parkersburg, W.Va./Parkersburg) added a service ace of her own as the lead swelled to eight points (15-7). Back-to-back kills by Fetsko stretched the W&J advantage to 22-13 later in the set. A kill by
Claire Sauerland (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg) gave W&J a 25-19 set two win.
Waynesburg gained an early lead in the third set by W&J answered to claim a 7-5 lead on kills by Sauerland and
Abby Tester (Munhall, Pa./Steel Valley). The Presidents methodically built upon their lead midway through the third set. W&J ripped off a 7-1 run to swell the lead to 20-11.
Lizzie Carmichael (Wyoming, Ohio/Wyoming) and Fetsko capped the run with consecutive kills. The home team tallied five of the final seven points to pick up the sweep.
Bridgett Everett (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg) notched a kill late in the set and finished off the match with a service ace.
W&J nearly doubled up Waynesburg in terms of kills (44-23) and assists (40-22). The Presidents also held a 6-3 advantage in service aces and were on the right side of a 64-52 advantage in digs.
Fetsko finished an outstanding individual hitting effort with 15 kills and a .542 hitting percentage. Sauerland added nine kills and two block assists while Carmichael finished with eight kills. Sacramento racked up 34 assists while adding seven digs and four kills. McFarland paced the Presidents' defensive efforts with 31 digs.
Caylin Angel (Wheeling, W.Va./Wheeling Park), making her first collegiate start, added nine digs.
