NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- A late goal scored in the second half in the 71st minute was the difference as host Westminster beat the Washington & Jefferson College women's soccer team by a 1-0 score Wednesday evening in conference play.
W&J posted a strong defensive effort for the majority of the game, as the unit was led by
Courtney Actis (Bechtelsville, Pa. / Boyertown Area),
Sydney Hoover (Lancaster, Pa. / Manheim Township), and
Tori DeVere (Mechanicsburg, Pa. / Cumberland Valley).
This defensive unit left Westminster scoreless through the first 71 minutes of play before the hosts tallied the lone goal of the match. The Titans goal came off the foot after Gabby Hunter in the 72nd minute. The Titans used a corner kick to set up a flurry of offensive opportunities. Consecutive shots by Megan Leary were saved and blocked before Hunter corralled the loose ball and scored. The goal was just the second of the season for Hunter.
W&J had limited offensive opportunities, as they were only able to register three shots on goal in the game. The Titans also held a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks.
The three W&J players who recorded a shot were
Peyton Behling (Annapolis, Md. / Severn School),
Olivia Olsen (Boiling Springs, Pa. / Boiling Springs), and
Hannah Goldman (Naples, Fla. / Barron Collier).
One of the bright spots for the Presidents was
Gabriella Lloyd (Butler, Pa. / Butler), who did her part to keep the Red and Black in the game. The senior goalkeeper finished with 10 saves over the 90 minutes of action.
W&J travels to Bethany College for a Presidents' Athletic Conference match on Saturday, Oct. 22. The afternoon bout is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.
