Women's Soccer picks up crucial shutout win at Bethany

BETHANY, W. Va. -- The Washington & Jefferson College women's soccer team recorded a pair of goals in a 10-minute span to pick up a 2-0 victory over Bethany College in a Presidents' Athletic Conference match Saturday afternoon at Bison Stadium.

Freshman forward Audrey Chapman (Elkins Park, Pa. / Phil-Mont Christian Academy) opened the scoring with a header into the back of the net in the 42nd minute. The goal, which was assisted by junior Makenna Mann (Herndon, Va./South Lakes), was the third in the past four matches for Chapman.

W&J doubled up its lead early in the second half when sophomore Hannah Goldman (Naples, Fla. / Barron Collier) tallied her first collegiate goal. Goldman's strike, which came in the 51st minute, was set up by her classmate Olivia Olsen (Boiling Springs, Pa. / Boiling Springs).

The Presidents would then ride their 2-0 lead to the final buzzer in an impressive showing. W&J's back line of Courtney Actis (Bechtelsville, Pa. / Boyertown Area), Jackie Flessiner (Eighty Four, Pa. / Canon-McMillan), and Katie Brown (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) held strong over the final 45 minutes to preserve the shutout victory.

Abby Hipkins (Canonsburg, Pa. / Canon-McMillan) got the start in goal as she registered three saves. Gabriella Lloyd (Butler, Pa. / Butler) would wrap up the shutout for the Presidents tallying two saves in the second half.

The win lifts W&J to 5-4-6 overall and 3-3-3 in the PAC. Bethany moves to 10-4-3 overall and 4-4-1 in league play.

W&J has 12 points and sits in the sixth spot entering its regular season finale on Wednesday. The top six teams qualify for the PAC Tournament, which starts on Saturday, Oct. 29.

W&J wraps up the regular season against Grove City on Wednesday, Oct. 26. The match will start at 6 p.m.
