ALBANY, N.Y. --
Hailey Wachowiak scored four goals as the Washington & Jefferson field hockey team snapped a three-match losing streak with a 9-0 road victory over Russell Sage College Sunday afternoon in an Empire 8 match.
The Presidents move to 3-2 in E8 play and 3-6 overall. The Gators drop to 0-6 overall and 0-2 in conference play.
W&J scored early and often in the decisive victory. Getting the Presidents on the board was
Sara Schriver (Greenville, S.C./Christ Church Episcopal School), who scored her first collegiate goal, off an assist from
Ella Phillips (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) late in the first quarter. Wachowiak made it 2-0 Presidents with an unassisted goal with just four seconds left in the opening frame.
The Presidents found the back of the cage twice in the second quarter as the visitors stretched the lead to 4-0 at halftime. Wachowiak scored just 21 seconds into the second quarter, finding the back of the cage after an assist from
Lily Giering (Reading, Pa./Exeter Township). Wachowiak scored again with just 1:35 remaining in the first half. The unassisted goal gave Wachowiak her third collegiate hat trick.
W&J showed no signs of letting us in the second half, as the Red and Black put together its most productive quarter in the third. In the 35th minute, Wachowiak returned the favor, as she assisted a Giering goal that made it 5-0. Less than a minute later,
Lina Crowley (Potomac, Md. / Bullis School) scored off an assist from
Riley Dortenzo (Chambersburg, Pa. / Chambersburg). Wachowiak added her fourth and final goal, an unassisted score that came in the 40th minute.
Just 24 seconds into the fourth quarter,
Madison Devine (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) registered her first goal of the season, making it 8-0 in favor of the Red and Black.
Lindsey Blount (Lockport, N.Y. / Starpoint) closed the scoring with her first collegiate goal, as Phillips added her second assist of the contest. The Blount score finished off a 9-0 victory for the Presidents. The nine goals are the most in a single game by W&J since the Presidents scored 10 twice against Bethany College during the 2012 season.
W&J held a 28-1 advantage in shots and a 10-1 margin in penalty corner opportunities.
All three W&J victories in 2022 have come in shutout fashion.
Anastasia Godat (Baltimore, Md. / Concordia Preparatory School) started and earned the victory in goal.
Gillian Meaney (Milford, Mass. / Milford) finished off the shutout by playing the final nine-plus minutes.
W&J hosts a pair of games this upcoming week at Cameron Stadium. The Presidents step out of conference play to face Oberlin on Tuesday, Oct. 4.
