ERIE, Pa. -- Six goals by
Andrew Edwards (Bexley, Ohio/St. Edwards Prep) helped power the Washington & Jefferson men's water polo team to a 13-11 victory over Mercyhurst University Sunday in the final game at the Penn State Behrend Invitational in Erie.
W&J scored six of the eight first quarter goals to build an early lead in the wire-to-wire victory. Edwards accounted for four first quarter goals to stake W&J to the advantage. Mercyhurst used four second quarter goals to cut the W&J lead to 8-6 by halftime.
The Presidents held the lead for the entirety of the second half but Mercyhurst pulled within a goal (12-11) by scoring at the 1:34 mark of the fourth quarter. W&J put the game away with a goal by
Mitchell Rubio (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) on the ensuing possession.
Ryan Bannon (Broomfield, Colo. / Broomfield) backed Edwards with a hat trick of his own.
Caine Dusza (Souderton, Pa. / Souderton) finished with 11 saves to earn the victory in goal.
W&J (7-5 overall) returns to action on Oct. 22 when they return to Erie for the Division III Championships.
