W&J finishes 2-1 at Division III Eastern Championships


ERIE, Pa. – The Washington & Jefferson men's water polo team earned a pair of victories on Sunday at the Division III Eastern Championships, which were hosted by Penn State Behrend at the David M. Hallman III Aquatics Center in Erie, Pa.
 
Sunday's Results
 
W&J 18, Connecticut College 6
 
Mitchell Rubio (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) and Chris Edwards (Bexley, Ohio/St. Charles Prep) scored four goals apiece as the Presidents rolled to an 18-6 win over the Camels. Nine Presidents scored in the win, which was the second this season over the Camels. 
 
W&J led 5-2 at halftime before using a big second half to pick up the decisive victory over Connecticut College. The Presidents scored eight times in the third quarter. 
 
Zishuo Ma (Los Alamitos, Calif./Los Alamitos) netted a hat trick with all three of his goals coming in the second half. Ryan Bannon (Broomfield, Colo./Broomfield) finished with a pair of goals. 
 
W&J 14, Penn State Behrend 6
 
The Presidents coasted to a comfortable 14-6 win over the Lions to wrap up the weekend. The win was the fourth this season for W&J against Penn State Behrend.
 
Rubio scored four times in the opening quarter as W&J built a 5-1 lead after the opening stanza. The Presidents led 7-3 at halftime before stretching the lead to 12-4 after the third. 
 
Seven different President scored, as they were led by five goals from Rubio. Bannon netted a hat trick with three goals. Andrew Edwards added a pair of goals in a multi-score effort. 
 

Saturday's Results 
 
Austin 13, W&J 6
 
 
W&J opened the Division III Championships with a 13-6 setback Saturday afternoon against Austin College. 
 
This marked the second meeting between the two programs this season, as W&J fell by a 12-8 score in the previous meeting on Sept. 18. 
 
Austin tallied five of the six first quarter goals to build an early lead. W&J's lone first quarter goal came via Andrew Edwards (Bexley, Ohio/St. Charles Prep). 
 
The 'Roos led by a 7-4 margin at halftime and 12-5 after the third quarter en route to the victory. 
 
Five different Presidents scored with Andrew Edwards tallying two goals. 


NOTES: Andrew Edwards earned a spot on the All-Tournament Team following the conclusion of the weekend. W&J is now 9-6 overall and returns to action on Nov. 18-19 at the MOUNTAIN PACIFIC SPORTS FEDERATION CHAMPIONSHIPS in Los Angeles, Calif.
