W&J volleyball suffers four-set loss at Bethany

BETHANY, W.Va. -- The host Bethany College Bison collected a 3-1 victory over the visiting Washington & Jefferson College volleyball team Tuesday evening in a Presidents' Athletic Conference match at the Hummel Field House in West Virginia.

Bethany 3, W&J 1 (16-25, 15-25, 25-19, 22-25)

The loss drops W&J to 3-6 in PAC play and 11-10 overall. Bethany moves to 5-3 in the conference and 13-11 overall.

After splitting the initial four points of the match, the Bison methodically built an advantage over the remainder of the opening set. W&J trailed by a 17-14 margin after a kill by freshman middle Abby Tester (Munhall, Pa./Steel Valley). The Bison put away the set one win by scoring the final five points for a 25-16 margin.

Bethany led for the entirety of the second set. The Bison led by just a 6-5 margin but scored eight of the next nine points to take a 14-6 advantage. The lead remained at least five points for the remainder of the set as Bethany won by a 25-15 score.

Facing a 2-0 hole, W&J found more success in the third set. The set was back and forth throughout until the Presidents gained a 14-12 advantage behind a cluster of kills from freshman outside Faith Fetsko (South Park, Pa./South Park), sophomore setter Adrianna Sacramento (Pittsburgh, Pa./Woodland Hills), junior middle Lizzie Carmichael (Wyoming, Ohio/Wyoming) and senior outside Claire Sauerland (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg). After back-to-back Bison points evened the score, the Presidents tallied eight of the next nine points to take a commanding 22-15 lead. W&J finished off the 25-19 set victory on a solo block by Carmichael.

W&J trailed early in the fourth before scoring four straight points to take an 11-10 lead. However, the Bison registered six of the next seven points, which included a trio of service aces, to claim a 16-12 advantage. The Bison bolstered that lead as it grew to as many as nine points (23-14). W&J desperately tried to rally, as the Red and Black tallied three straight points and eight of the next nine to trim the deficit to 24-22. However, the Bison withstood the rally and avoided a fifth set when Hannah Rogers finished the victory with a kill for BC.

Fetsko was the lone President to reach double figures in kills, as she finished with 10. Sauerland added nine successful attacks. Sacramento totaled 32 assists in the match.

Defensively, Carmichael paced W&J with five total blocks (four solo). Freshman libero Piper McFarland (West Mifflin, Pa./Cornerstone Preparatory Academy) led W&J with 23 digs. Freshman Beyonce Pierce (Parkersburg, W.Va./Parkersburg) finished with a team-best three service aces.

Bethany's middles Emma Marthins and Riley Felton combined to account for 31 of the Bison's 55 kills. The Bison also held an advantage in service, as the Green and White recorded 10 aces. Meanwhile, the Presidents committed 10 service errors.

W&J travels to Westminster College for a conference match on Thursday, Oct. 27. Start time is slated for 7 p.m.
