Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Aaron Thompson, SID

Franciscan edges W&J in men's soccer, 2-1

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio -- A goal by Nick Cross in the 59th minute of play was the difference as Franciscan University of Steubenville beat the Washington & Jefferson men's soccer team by a 2-1 score Saturday afternoon in a Presidents' Athletic Conference match at Trinity Health System Field.

Franciscan scored the lone goal during Saturday's first half of play. An unassisted score by Jonathan Schriner in the 26th minute gave the Barons the 1-0 lead. W&J had chances in the first half, tallying five shots and gaining six corner kick opportunities. However, the Presidents could not convert and trailed by a one-goal margin at the break.

W&J scored the equalizer in the 55th minute of play. Parker Byas (Columbia, Md. / Mount Saint Joseph) notched his fourth goal of the season. Byas' score was assisted by Ethan Bowser (McKeesport, Pa./Elizabeth-Forward).

The Barons wasted little time in regaining the lead. Less than four minutes later, Franciscan scored the eventual game-winning score. Schriner played a hand in the second Barons goal, as he assisted the Cross' goal. The Presidents tallied three more shots and two more corner kicks but were unable to convert down the stretch.

Franciscan out-shot W&J by a 16-10 margin (5-2 Shots On Goal). W&J held a 9-4 advantage in corner kicks. Byas led the Presidents with three of their 10 shots.

W&J (6-5-1 overall, 3-2-1 PAC) returns to action at home against Geneva on Saturday, Oct. 15. The match will be Senior Day for the Presidents. Start time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
