MARIETTA, Ohio -- The Washington & Jefferson women's lacrosse raced out to an early lead en route to a 16-10 victory over previously unbeaten Marietta College Wednesday evening in a non-conference game at Marietta Field in Ohio.
The victory is the first of the season for the Red and Black, who improve to 1-3 overall. The loss drops Marietta to 5-1 overall. The Pioneers previously defeated PAC counterparts Grove City, Westminster and Franciscan in non-conference play.
W&J led 5-1 after the first quarter and held a 7-2 advantage at halftime. Marietta was able to get things going in the third quarter but still trailed 9-6 entering the fourth. The Presidents led by as many as eight goals in the fourth quarter before earning the 16-10 win.
Amanda Effland (Frederick, Md./Frederick) finished with a team-high four goals, each of which were scored in the first half as W&J built its lead. Effland added six draw controls and five ground balls.
Sarah Labovitz (Great Falls, Va./Bullis School) filled the stat sheet, as she finished with seven points (2g, 5a), nine ground balls, six caused turnovers and four draw controls.
Aisa Uhler (East Lansing, Mich./East Lansing),
Emily Heck (Reading, Pa./Berks Catholic) and
Lina Crowley (Potomac, Md./The Bullis School) each finished with three points on the night. Uhler tallied three goals, each of which came in the fourth quarter. Heck (2g, 1a) and Crowley (2g, 1a) also put together strong efforts.
Clara Sherwood (Indiana, Pa./Indiana) finished with a pair of goals and five draw controls.
Sadie Firman (Richmond, Vt./Mount Mansfield Union) was one of seven different Presidents to find the back of the net in the game. Firman opened the second half scoring with her first goal of the season.
Defensively,
Sam Casile (New Kensington, Pa./Plum) registered three ground balls and three caused turnovers.
Kaitlyn Brown (Charlotte Hall, Md./La Plata) made five saves and picked up three ground balls as she earned the win in goal.
Advantages in ground balls (34-25) and draw controls (19-11) were key for W&J in the victory.
W&J hosts Kenyon College for a non-conference game on Satuday, March 19. Start time is set for 4 p.m.
