Softball drops a pair of games in Spring Break Tournament

CLERMONT, Fla. -- The Washington & Jefferson College softball team fell in a pair of games at the PFX Spring Games on Wednesday.

The Presidents fall to 4-4 this week in Florida.

Game 1: Union 8, W&J 1

W&J trailed by a 2-1 margin before Union tacked on six runs late in the game to finish off the victory.

Austine Kinney (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick) singled in the fifth inning to get W&J on the board.

The Dutchmen responded by recording a six run inning in the top of the sixth to gain an 8-1 lead over the Presidents.

Union held an 11-3 advantage on hits over the Presidents. Olivia Dewick, (Pittsburgh, Pa./Keystone) Ashleigh Gerber (Woodstock, Md./Marriots Ridge), and Kinney combined to record the three hits for W&J.

Chloe Smith (McDonald, Pa./Fort Cherry) got the start in the circle. Smith recorded her first loss of the season with 5.2 IP, eight hits and four walks.

Game 2: Carleton: 10, W&J: 2 (6 innings)

Carleton posted a six-run inning in the bottom of the first to create a deficit the Presidents could not recover from.

Sarah Labbe (Belgrade, Maine/Messalonksee) produced a two-run single to account for W&J's only runs in game two.

Sydney Petrowski (Lemont Furnace, Pa./Connellsville) got the start in the circle for 3.0 innings before Jordan Hinz (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) came in to relieve.

W&J will return to action on Thursday, March 24. W&J will face St. Catherine and Buffalo State to conclude their week. First pitch is scheduled for 9:30 a.m.
