Early surge helps W&J roll to decisive PAC win at Franciscan


STEUBENVILLE, Ohio -- Junior attack Amanda Effland (Frederick, Md./Frederick) registered a season-high eight points as the Washington & Jefferson women's lacrosse team used a fast start to roll to a 15-7 win over Franciscan University of Steubenville on Wednesday afternoon. 

W&J has won four straight games overall. The Presidents are 3-0 in Presidents' Athletic Conference play and 5-4 overall. The loss drops Franciscan to 2-3 in PAC games and 5-5 overall. 

The Presidents led 3-1 after the first quarter and saw its lead swell to 8-1 at halftime. Effland played a major factor in the dominant start, as the junior tallied four goals and an assist during the first half of action. 

W&J led by at least six goals for the duration of the second half. Aisa Uhler (East Lansing, Mich./East Lansing) and Emily Heck (Reading, Pa./Berks Catholic) each found the back of the net twice over the final 30 minutes. 

Seven different Presidents scored in the match, as Becca Ghion (Sutersville, Pa./Yough), Sofia Jenkins (Hughesville, Md./The Calverton School), Sadie Firman (Richmond, Vt./ Mount Mansfield Union) and Haley Lawyer (Glenside, Pa./Archbishop Wood) each scored at least one goal in the victory. 

Sarah Labovitz (Great Falls, Va./The Bullis School) was a force again in the midfield. Labovitz finished with game highs in draw controls (10), caused turnovers (5) and ground balls (4). Defensively, Ella Phillips (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) accounted for four caused turnovers and two ground balls. Sam Casile (New Kensington, Pa./Plum) had three caused turnovers and three ground balls. 

Kaitlyn Brown (Charlotte Hall, Md./La Plata) made four saves in 60 minutes in goal. 

W&J travels to Westminster on Wednesday, April 20. Start time is set for 5 p.m. in New Wilmington.
