W&J falls on the road in PAC play at Chatham

PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- Strong second and third quarters helped the host Chatham Cougars down visiting W&J by a 20-10 score in a Presidents' Athletic Conference match at Graham Field Friday evening.

The loss drops W&J to 5-5 overall and 1-2 in PAC play. Chatham improves to 3-9 and 1-2 in league matches.

Chatham took a 2-1 lead after the opening 15 minutes of a low-scoring first quarter. Parker Lucas (Delmar, Del./Delmar) tallied a man-up goal off a pass from Carter Watts (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown) for W&J's lone score of the first.

The Cougars took control by scoring six of the eight goals in the second quarter. That margin helped Chatham gain an 8-3 lead by halftime. Both Alex Strain (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper Saint Clair) and Sam Snider (Morgantown, W. Va./University) scored unassisted goals in the second. Snider's score evened the score at 3-3 but the Cougars at the 11:01 mark. Chatham responded with five consecutive goals to end the half with the five-goal lead.

Chatham outscored W&J by a 7-2 margin in the third quarter. The Presidents and Cougars both scored five goals in the fourth quarter.

Lucas, Strain and Aiden Herman (West End, N.C. / Pinecrest) each registered a pair of goals in the second half for W&J.

Strain (3g, 1a) and Lucas (3g, 1a) finished with four points each to pace the offense. Watts finished with three assists, which gives him a single-season school record 31 assists in 2022. He eclipses the previous record of 29 by Bryan Whipkey's in 2017.

Luke Geister (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) paced W&J's defensive efforts with five ground balls and four caused turnovers. Henry Beardwood (Wilmington, Del./Salesianum School) recorded 15 saves in goal.

Chatham held advantages in shots (60-36), ground balls (52-32) and face-off wins (24-9).
