ERIE, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson College volleyball team split a pair of matches Saturday at the Penn State Behrend Invitational in Erie. The Presidents opened the day by defeating Fredonia in four sets before falling to Oswego State later in the day in a four-set match.
W&J 3, Fredonia 1
The Presidents claimed the initial two sets by scores of 25-21 and 25-17. Fredonia responded by edging W&J by a 25-23 score in the third. The Presidents closed out the victory by hitting at a .367 clip in a 25-19 set four win.
Faith Fetsko (South Park, Pa./South Park) paced the Presidents' efforts with a team-high 13 kills, four service aces and 11 digs.
Lizzie Carmichael (Wyoming, Ohio/Wyoming) added 12 kills and .476 for the match.
Jaden Blough (Meyersdale, Pa./Meyersdale) also put together a strong effort with 11 kills and a .429 hitting percentage.
Claire Sauerland (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg) tallied eight kills.
Adrianna Sacramento (Pittsburgh, Pa./Woodland Hills) dished out 38 assists and recorded nine digs from her setter position. Freshman libero
Piper McFarland (West Mifflin, Pa./Cornerstone Preparatory Academy) led the defense with 17 digs.
W&J held advantages in kills (49-40 and digs (67-51) in the victory over Fredonia.
Oswego State 3, W&J 1
The Presidents opened with a 25-20 victory in the initial set versus Oswego State. However, the Lakers responded by edging W&J in each of the next three sets. Oswego State claimed the second by a 26-24 score before adding 25-23 set wins in both the third and the fourth sets.
Carmichael continued her strong week, as the junior finished with 14 kills and a .414 hitting percentage in the nightcap. She also added three service aces and four total blocks.
Blough reached double figures in kills for the second straight match, as she finished with 10. Sacramento added 34 more assists to round out her day. McFarland was the team leader with 16 digs while
Ashley Bertling (Berkeley, Mich./Berkeley) added 13 digs.
Shelby Barrie (Washington, Pa./Washington) had four total blocks.
For her efforts on the day, Carmichael was named to the All-Tournament Team at the event.
The split moves the Presidents to 3-3 overall. They travel to La Roche for a non-conference match on Saturday, Sept. 17.
